They've been playing this song on CBC, and her album just came out. Like her messy style--reminds me of Lucinda Williams. Strange mix of songs--blues, and bluegrass, and rock and pop. Worth checking out.

In other news, there should be more stuffed animals in videos.

I found an old blog post listing 36 books we'd just bought (special at work back in 2009.) Given all the second hand books, and books I bought from 15 years at a bookstore, it's always a relief to know I have read some of the books I've bought. ...About a third. In 6 years.

yes! The Gargoyle - Andrew Davidson: Wasn't for me.

no :-(   Paradise - Toni Morrison

no :-(   And Then We Came to the End - Joshua Ferris

yes!  The Time Traveler's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger: Similar to Gargoyle, and not my thing.

yes!  The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society - Mary Ann Shaffer
: Mixed feelings. Loved the beginning--some of the letters she writes to her friend (or publisher or something) are really funny. But the rest of the book... not for me.

yes!  Three Bags Full - Leonie Swann:
Sheep solving a mystery. Loved it. Especially their description of the humans having sex.

no :-(   Faceless Killers - Henning Mankell

yes!  Morlante - Stéphane Dompierre: About a writer on a pirate ship. Vulgar, but I thought it was hilarious.

reading!  The White Tiger - Aravind Adiga: Apparently I once had an Indian customer who bought three copies. Didn't remember that. Enjoying so far.

no :-(    De Niro's Game - Rawi Hage

no :-(    Six Suspects - Vikas Swarup

yes!   Monkey Love - Brenda Scott Royce : It was cute.

yes!   My Lucky Star - Joe Keenan: If you took PG Wodehouse, and he was gay, and you threw in sex--that would be this book. Great Wodehouseian similes.

yes!   Salaam, Paris - Kavita Daswani: It was okay.

yes!   Game of Thrones - Was among the fantasy books picked out for Fernando.

Then I guess I bought some romance novels, as research or whatever. Clearly a mistake, cause I haven't read them. Time to move on.

no :-(   Stay the Night - Lynn Viehl: No memory of buying it, don't know why I did.

no :-(   A Knight in Shining Armor - Jude Deveraux

no :-(   Not Quite a Husband - Sherry Thomas

no :-(   Date Me Baby, One More Time - Stephanie Rowe

yes!  The Naked Baron - Sally MacKenzie: I think I read it.

no :-(   Tempting Fate - Alissa Johnson

no :-(   The Drunkards Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives - Mlodinow

tried   Millionaire: The Philanderer, Gambler, and Duelist Who Invented Modern Finance - Gleeson

How minimalist can I make my opinion on 50 Shades?

1. If you loved the books / love the movie, great. But if you didn't see any abusive elements in it, high thee to a critique--not to ruin your enjoyment of it, but cause you need a primer on (a) what's abusive, and (b) what's healthy BDSM. Look, I love the Star Wars movies, doesn't mean I can't see what shite in them.

2. If you're critical of the story, then be specific and stop talking about bored or repressed housewives,--that's LAZY AND SEXIST. And don't talk down about the people who loved it. No one likes being condescended to, and it just makes them more entrenched and less likely to hear you.

3. If you think what's wrong with the story is that it involves kinky sex, then you probably (a) don't know much about what a proper BDSM relationship is supposed to be, and (b) you're probably way more conservative than me, so... there's not a big basis for conversation.

No, I will not see the movie/read the books in order to Judge for Myself. I've read (literally) minute-by-minute descriptions online. If that's good enough for radio sports commentating, then it's good enough for me.
